Conseil des Atikamekw de Manawan decided to concentrate its efforts on three priority areas through the project: 1) prevention and awareness, 2) promotion, and 3) intervention. Matcekiw, which can be translated from Atikamekw as “childhood development through a strengths-based approach,” is designed to foster the development of youth and their ability to take action. It is intended to complement the strategies put in place in the school success plan and the strategies of the Band Council’s strategic plan. Matcekiw offers students of all ages tools to deal with challenges and develop a positive attitude toward school and their future. Over ten activities and workshops were developed and reached over 600 youth and parents. These activities and workshops were divided mainly into two components: 1) preparation for exams and the transition to secondary school for grade 5 and 6 elementary students and 2) childhood development and the importance of care from an early age for parents.
